In 1937, when Japan invaded China, Xu joined the Eighth Route Army and became one of its key leaders.

Throughout his career, Xu proved himself to be fearless and resourceful. He played a crucial role in many battles against Japanese forces and was known for his unwavering dedication to his country. His reputation spread far beyond military circles; he was admired by ordinary people who saw him as an inspiration.

In 1949, after Japan's defeat and Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan, Xu returned home but continued fighting for peace and stability within China. He remained active until his death at age 73 from natural causes on April 12th of that year.

As I sat there listening to this incredible story about someone I had never heard much about before then or since — it felt like I'd stumbled upon something truly special.
